This is a new department in the making, coming into its own in an age where its importance is finally being realised. The department aims to help alleviate suffering and ease the process of death for patients with a wide range of incurable conditions- both malignant and otherwise.
The team consists of a Palliative Physician, trained nursing staff and a clinical psychologist. The objectives are in terms of respite and terminal care of patients who require it in co-ordination with other clinical units of the hospital. These are achieved through counselling sessions and effective pain management. To this end we have obtained a licence to distribute oral morphine for patients with malignant pain. Home visits are being planned.
