CAHO – One day workshop on Nursing Communication – 30.11.2018December 10, 2018
A one day workshop on Nursing communication was organized by CAHO (Consortium of Accredited Health Care Organization) in association with Dr. Jeyasekharan Hospital & Nursing Home on 30.11.2018 at Dr. Jeyasekharan Medical Trust Auditorium.
A total of 27 delegates from various hospitals from Kanyakumari district and Thirunelvel district participated in this workshop.
The workshop started with prayer song by Hospital choir. Inauguration ceremony started with lighting the kuthuvilakku by dignitaries. The following dignitaries were present during inauguration.

Mrs. Vanammal, Nursing Superintendent Dr. Jeyasekharan Hospital & Nursing Home welcomed the gathering followed by the faculty message by Dr. Anna George as representing the CAHO and she explained the activities of CAHO.
Inaugural message was given by Managing Trustee Dr. Devaprasath Jeyasekharan and workshop message by Dr. Renu Devaprasath, Medical Administrator. The inauguration ceremony ended with vote of thanks by Mrs.Jeyalakshmi, Nurse Educator. She expressed her thanks to all the organizing committee members Mr. Finaly Samson, Mr. Jeyesh, Mr. Nagarajan, Mr. Udhyakumar and team, Mr. Padmanaban, Mr. Joselin and Students of College of Allied Health Sciences.
Presentation session started with workshop introduction & followed by presentation on Listening and Empathy by Dr. Anna George and Barriers in communication was presented by Mrs. Leena chandrasekharan & Mrs. Thilagavathy. A discussion on Bedside communication was more interesting and scenarios given to the delegates. The delegates are divided into 5 groups. Each group given one scenario to do a role play and the communication skills are observed and feedbacks are given to delegates by the faculties.
After Lunch, Communication: Challenging scenarios session was done by Dr. Anna George. Each group got one challenging scenario and discussed regarding scenarios and how to communicate during that challenging scenario was presented by each group. The secession was very interactive and thought provoking. ISBAR (Introduction, situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation) communication was discussed. It is widely used handoff tool organizes a conversation into essential elements in the transfer of information and enables the nurses to report, concise, pertinent and complete verbal information and minimizes the risk of communication error during nursing handover and taking over.
Scripted and standardized communication session was very interactive. With AIEDT mnemonic, how to format the scripted & standardized communication is explained with scenarios. Each group delegates formatted the scripted communication for given scenario and it was discussed with other groups. The faculties are supplemented the points missed by the delegates, it was very useful in improving the bed side communication.
Interactive session on innovations facilitating communication: Learning from other industries & professional nursing etiquettes useful in improving the nursing communication.

Dr. Renu Devaprasath appreciated the CAHO faculty for their useful presentation & scenarios and delegates in taking initiation in participation of such useful workshop. The workshop met the objective in improving the nursing communication.
