Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is a major epidemic in the world and India is not far behind the rest of the countries. Five percent of total Indian population is obese. Tamil Nadu ranks fourth in the list with Punjab, Kerala and Goa leading the show. The rising trend of obesity is due to fast food culture, sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activities.

Obesity results in serious ailments including Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular diseases, Sleep apnoea and various arthritis problems.

Solution to this problem

  1. Lifestyle modification
  2. Exercise and diet
  3. Medicines
  4. Bariatric surgery

The first three options are applicable for milder form of obesity. However, bariatric surgery is a very promising treatment for morbidly obese patients – Body Mass Index (BMI) >40. It offers sustained and significant weight reduction of upto 70% of excess weight. It controls diabetes and hypertension even before the weight reduction. It offers cure for sleep apnoea. Hence, it is no longer considered a cosmetic surgery, but a life saving surgery.
